2022 Volvo V60 Cross Country Review

It’s also the perfect daily driver, weekend adventurer, and proof the all-round family car really does exist. This Volvo wagon can adapt to any situation and look completely stunning. In the middle of the city, suburbs or out the back of nowhere, the Cross Country feels right at home.

Interior

Our test vehicle was equipped with the optional ventilated Nappa leather accented seats. These 16-way electrically adjustable front seats have under-thigh support and look slim and sculptured. And yet, they can cater to a range of body shapes.

We recommend you add in the optional massage functionality too. It just adds a little “something, something” for the front seat occupants, and will probably ensure you’ll never actually want to leave the V60.

Driftwood décor inlays, a tailored gear knob and steering wheel, automatic dimming inner and exterior mirrors, and 4-zone electronic climate control all feature. There’s even a cooled glove box and CleanZone interior air quality system.

A 9.0-inch vertical touchscreen infotainment system is your cockpit control centre, and your second in command for the majority of the V60’s accessories and functions. It’s here you’ll find DAB+ digital radio, Bluetooth, in-car web apps, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

It is wired, but that does ensure better sound quality. There are two USB ports, and a wireless phone charger as well. Speaking of audio quality, the optional Bowers & Wilkins 1,100W high-end audio system delivers pure hedonistic pleasure.

Nordic musical icons such as ABBA, Ace of Base and Roxette sound epic through the 15-speaker sound system, making the cabin a great place to travel in, whether it’s to the corner shops, or the next state.

Put simply, if you can navigate an iPad, then the V60 is not going to stump you. Smart and well-placed menus and simple navigation steps make it easy to use. If you still get stuck, there’s voice command as well.

Spaciousness abounds, with generous front row leg room that does not hinder second row passengers either. Rear seating is just as comfortable as the front, and child seats or two adults are not a problem for the V60.

Middle passengers be warned though, as the driveline hump does have a decent girth to it. That aside, pillar ventilation, and an arm rest with storage and pop out cup holders are all there to support those in the back seats.

Seat pockets, door storage, rear climate control (which can be managed from the first row, for underage users) and dual USB-C charge points are all there too.

The V60 Cross Country offers 529-litres of boot space, and the rear seats fold completely flat for a huge 1449-litres of storage. A concealed space-saver, flip-up shopping divider, hooks, tie-down points, all the usual Volvo expectations have been ticked off.

There’s even a powered tailgate that does not have a meltdown when using the remote, touch or foot gesture. It worked a treat every time.

Powertrain & Drive

On the road, the drive is as smooth as the vehicle’s impressive presentation. The handling is flowy, comfortable, and accurate, while the suspension takes on the terrain effortlessly. There are no flappy paddles, just a simple driving experience, with three drive modes.

Boasting a humble 183kW of power and 350Nm torque from its B5 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine (with a mild-hybrid attached), the V60 has more than enough power for your daily and weekend duties.

Paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission and Volvo’s all-wheel drive system, the package combines with an elevated ride height to deliver a quite comfortable ride across all terrains.

Push it through a few corners though and it does feel quite boaty, with noticeable body roll. Capable of 0-100km/h in 6.6 seconds, there’s plenty of grunt, delivered in a neither boisterous nor attention grabbing manner.

Adaptive lighting, auto high beam, front, and rear wiper operation, 360-degree camera system, all play their role in making the driving experience more pleasurable.

Volvo have a claimed fuel economy of 7.4-litres/100km for the Cross County’s 60-litre tank, but during our week of indulgence we managed 7.8-litres/100km. Quite a good result considering our wheel time and driving conditions.

Safety

The 2022 Volvo V60 Cross Country has a 5-star ANCAP rating and a multitude of safety features. City safety, LED headlights, wipers with integrated washers, oncoming lane mitigation, blind spot information, and run-off-road mitigation all feature.

You’ll also find hill start assist, hill descent control, park assist pilot, ISO-FIX points, and a power child lock.

Pricing & Options

It’s priced at $74,190 plus on-roads (as tested, with optional extras). Add-ons, like the Lifestyle Pack that adds the panoramic sunroof, can drive the price up fairly quickly too. Alongside that, there’s plenty of colour choices, including Fusion Red, Black Stone and Denim Blue.
